COLLECTION NO. 168

Note: Very rare and highly desirable obverse legend DEO ET DOMINO (Deus = "God"; Dominus = "Lord"). Only three Roman emperors: Aurelian, Probus and Carus used such a pompous and pretentious title in their coinage during their lives. While it was not uncommon for the Roman Senate to deify emperors after their death and for successors to issue posthumuos coins celebrating deified, deceased emperors as "diivi" ("godly"), it was highly unusual and exceptional to title an incumbent emperor as "God". The Deo et Domino title was first used by Aurelian. A must have in every serious Roman Empire coin collection.

In Probus' coinage the Deo et Domino obverse oberse legend was struck only with three reverses: Clementia Temp, Soli Invicto and Virtvs Probi Avg. The latter two, including the iconic Virtvs Probi Avg reverse, are much rarer than the Clementia temp reverse.

Only the 4th specimen of this variant known!

Virtually as struck with stunning details and full original silvering and mint luster. Spectacular coin!

THE finest known example of a Probus coin with the iconic Deo et Domino obverse legend ! One of the absolute highligts of this specialized Probus collection!
