This coin published at Probus Coins Online (https://probuscoins.fr/); probuscoins.fr 731 (R3; this coin)

Exrtremely fine with almost full silvering remaining.

Unlisted in RIC. Only the second known example of this highly interesting type with dot between the first X and the second X of the XXI reform mark (both from the same reverse die). No other reverse die with dot between X and XX is known in the whole coinage of Probus

The second known example is my coin no. 977.

The position of the dot is very peculiar and it is difficult to determine its meaning unlike the meaning of the rare specimens from Siscia with the XX•I mark. The latter mark was used in the latest issues of Siscia under Aurelian to underline the essence of the reform of the coinage, i.e. the 1/20 ratio of silver in the reformed antoninianus.

Probus coinage of Antioch is very common and repetitive with virtually no interesting types. This coin in an exception to this rule.

Provenance: Paul Francis Jacquier auction 46 lot 599 = ex Philippe Gysen collection
