Scarce Bragg’s Whitehaven (Cumberland) copper farthing token dated 1812. Obverse: Monogram of “WB” within a circle: “PAYABLE AT WHITEHAVEN”. Reverse: Ship sailing to left within a circle: “FARTHING TOKEN 1812”. Diagonally centre-grained edge. According to Withers, this was issued either by Wilson Bragg, a grocer or William Bragg, a painter and chair-manufacturer but the name does not appear in the business directories of the period. However, I have to thank Michael Finlay for confirming that Wilson Bragg opened his grocer's shop in Whitehaven in 1812, after the publication of that year's directory and went out of business before the issue of the following one. Listed in Paul & Bente Withers' “British Copper Tokens 1811-1820.
