The coin was found in Kent, England
The obverse reminds of the famous Skanomodu-solidus in the British Musem, which is named after the runic inscription Skanomodu on the reverse.
The model was probably a Solidus of Valentinian III (425-455) from Ravenna, minted around AD 430-445, or possibly a Gallic imitation of such a Solidus.
The coin is made from pale gold.
Cf. Svante, Fischer "Barbarous imitations in Scandinavian solidus hoards" in Nordic Numismatic Journal 2. series 2. p. 17 No. 7-8
shows a coin from the same dies, found in Hoard 176, Hardings, Vall parish Gotland. The authors groups this coin as Western style imitaitons in the name of Valentinian III, and argues that the coin may have been minted in Scandinavia.
