From Slokind: Dionysos. Look for traces of the ribbon bow on the staff of his thyrsos (but don't worry if it's lacking). The thing in his r. hand is a kantharos (wine cup specific to him). The animal is his panther, looking back over its shoulder up at him. Even for Caracalla, Traianopolis is not a very common mint. Pat L. No large Dionysos found listed in Varbanov III. Not in Lindgren II-III (N.B., Lindgren confutes Tranianopolis with Augusta Traiana: they are separate places, but he's not there, anyhow). Not in SNG Cop. II (though that keeps the two towns separate, and there you can see a Dionysos for Caracalla at the much commoner Augusta Traiana mint). I suppose you already have checked Wildwinds and CoinArchives, where I bet you didn't find him. P.L. |
