Every year, Calgary hosts the Calgary Stampede, a ten-day rodeo, carnival, and exhibition attracting over a million visitors annually. It is Canada's largest annual festival and has since become a cultural icon of the Canadian Prairies. Starting in 1963, trade dollar tokens were struck for use during the festival as a souvenir and novelty, good for one dollar anywhere in Calgary before a certain expiry date. Because most were kept as souvenirs rather than redeemed, this generated a large profit for both the issuing mint and the Stampede authorities.

Starting in 1976, Stampede Dollars displayed one of four privy marks on the reverse: the boot, the hat, the horseshoe, and the saddle. At least one example (such as the one pictured) is known to exist with no privy mark at all, but these pieces are most likely unique patterns.

Like most of the American continents, the Calgary area was occupied by native peoples before European contact. In the early history of the city, native attacks were not uncommon and a general tension existed between the peoples. This was apparently resolved by the signing of Treaty 7 with the Blackfoot Nation, in 1877, although admittedly the Blackfoot got a bad deal out of it.
