RIC IV 225* (legends and officina mark variant)

Roman Empire, Volusian (251-253), Antoninianus, Antioch mint, 1st emission, 2nd officina.

Obverse: IM C V AF GAL VEND VOLVSIANO AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind, •• below;

Reverse: AEQVITAS AVGG, Aequitas standing left, holding scales and cornucopia;

Notes: The AEQVITAS AVGG reverse type is very common for Volusian at Rome, while at Antioch it's extremely rare and only listed for his father Gallus (RIC IV 81); my example shares the same reverse die as the only example of RIC IV 81 I've managed to find on the internet, on Richard Beale's website. There were also no examples in the Gibraltar hoard analyzed by Gallwey, which contained many very rare Antiochene types of the period, and Metcalf didn't know of any examples, either, in his overview of these rulers' hoards, so right now it seems to be unique.
