Third Century Numismatist

Roman Empire, Trebonianus Gallus (251-253), Antoninianus, Antioch mint, 2nd emission, 7th officina.

Obverse: IMP C C VIB TREB GALLVS P F AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind, IIV below;

Reverse: VICT-ORI-A AVG, Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm, IIV between Victory's legs;

Notes: This coin is completely different from all the other Roman Imperial coins struck at Antioch in this time period as the officina mark on the reverse, instead of being in the exergue, is located between Victory's legs. This variant is the only occasion in which it happens, and the two known coins come from the same reverse die, suggesting that it was the decision of a single engraver.

Riferimento : RIC IV - (c.f. RIC IV 93 - officina mark in different location); Gallwey - ; Metcalf - ;

Collezione : Trebonianus Gallus - Antioch
