Roman Empire, Claudius II (268-270), Antoninianus, Rome mint, 1st emission, ? officina.
Obverse: IMP C M AVR CLAVDIVS P F AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind;
Reverse: ADVENTVS AVG, Emperor on horseback riding left, raising right arm and holding transverse sceptre in left hand;
Notes: The first obverse legend to be used on Claudius II's antoniniani from Rome appears to have been IMP C M AVR CLAVDIVS P F AVG, as it was customary to fully spell out the emperor's name on his first emission, which appears to have lasted for a very short period, though, judging by its rarity. This obverse-reverse combination is particularly scarce, as it's missing from all the catalogues and the only other known example, a double die match, was in the Finn Johannessen collection.
