monete antico dal al romani imperiali e repubblicani mir 648a

Roman Empire, Gallienus (253-268), Antoninianus, Rome mint, 11th emission, 12th officina.

Obverse: GALLIENVS AVG, radiate head right;

Reverse: CONSERVAT PIETAT, Emperor standing left, extending right hand and holding long sceptre in left hand, kneeling figure to the left, XII in exergue;

Notes: This peculiar type, employed exclusively by Gallienus, portrays the emperor in the act of raising a kneeling figure which likely represents the Roman people. The legend refers to Gallienus' role of protector of traditional values against the instability of the times; this theme will become even more important in the following emission, the so-called "Zoo series".

Riferimento : RIC V - (c.f. RIC V 171 - unlisted obverse legend); MIR 648a;

Collezione : Gallienus - Rome
