Surface Printed (or Typographed) British stamps were first produced in 1855, and this printing methodology was used for all the definitive postage stamps above the Two Pence denomination.  All of these surface printed stamps were produced by Thomas De La Rue & Co.

Until 1880, the Line Engraved 1/2 Penny through 2 Pence denominations continued to be produced by Perkins, Bacon & Co., as they had been since 1840. 

After 1880, Thomas De La Rue & Co. took over the production of ALL the postage stamps of Queen Victoria, and from that time, all of the definitive British stamps were surface-printed (typographed).

Ten different paper watermarks were used for the production of the surface-printed postage stamps, between 1855 and 1901. Surface printed British Stamps continued to evolve, during the period from 1873 to 1881.  This period includes more design changes and additional denominations, and of course, multiple printings on papers with various types of watermarks.

Between 1883 and 1884, a new 2 S. 6 P. denomination was introduced, and the 5 S. and 10 S. denominations were re-designed.  These new large-format high denomination definitive stamps replaced those issued between 1867 and 1882.  These stamps were all printed on paper with WMK 31 -- the Large Anchor watermark.

• 2 S. 6 P.  (1883 - Scott #96) - Lilac on White Paper, Lilac on Bluish Paper (Rare - Illustrated Above).
• 5 S.  (1882 - Plate 4 - Scott #90) - Carmine Rose on White Paper (Illustrated Above), Carmine Rose on Bluish Paper (Rare), Deep Crimson on White Paper.
• 10 S.  (1882 - Plate 1 - Scott #91) - Ultramarine on White Paper (Illustrated Above), Ultramarine on Bluish Paper (Rare), Cobalt on White Paper (Rare), Cobalt on Bluish Paper (Rare).
