License plates have a history almost as long as the automobile itself. Carl Benz invented the car in 1886 and almost 20 years later, over 63,000 cars were on the road in the United States alone. As the popularity of the car grew, state governments needed a way to track who was coming and going across state lines. In 1901, New York became the first state to mandate that their residents have license plates. However, it wasn’t until 1903 that Massachusetts became the first state to actually issue these license plates to residents. By 1918 all 48 states were issuing license plates.
