This coin lacks any portion of the date on the flan, but it is still a silver cob with all the romance of the Golden Age of Piracy, with which these coins are often associated.
Based on the style, it was likely struck at Potosí in Bolivia, perhaps in the 1730s. It comes with an old paper envelope which indicates someone paid $1.00 for it in 1943.
In shopping for interesting pieces for my CoinTalk giveaways, I came across this coin on eBay, and was intrigued. However, I don't know much about cobs, so I posted discussion threads on CoinTalk and Collectors Universe, in order to glean some useful information. Collectors Universe member "realeswatcher" was particularly helpful in this regard, confirming the ID as a Potosí coin from the early 1700s.
Once that information was determined, I went back to eBay to purchase the coin, only to find that it had just sold! I then forgot all about it.
To my astonishment, a week or so later, it arrived in my mailbox! CoinTalk member "paddyman98" had bought it and shipped it to me as a surprise gift. So whoever wins it in a future giveaway has him to thank for it as much as me!
Sadly, I accidentally cut the corner off of the old 1943 paper envelope when I opened the package, but I have taped that back together.
