Edmund Hillary (1919-2008) un alpiniste néo-zélandais qui, avec le général britannique John Hunt et le sherpa tibétain Tensing Norgay, furent les premiers hommes à atteindre le sommet de l'Everest le 29 mai 1953. Il fut par après ambassadeur en inde, au Népal et au Bangladesh.
