Gaius Iulius Caesar Octavianus

"Asia recepta! – Asia Reclaimed!" The coin commemorates the transfer of the province of Asia to Octavian following his victory over Mark Antony. This province had been allocated to Antony under the agreement reached between Octavian and Antony in 40 BCE.

The cista mystica was a wicker basket used to hold snakes, which were carried during the mysteries dedicated to Dionysus (Bacchus). The motif of the cista mystica was a typical iconographic representation on coins from the province of Asia and earlier on coins from this region during the Hellenistic period. These were the so-called cistophoric tetradrachms. Mark Antony also minted coins featuring this design. On Octavian's coin, Victoria (Victory), standing atop the cista mystica, proclaims his triumph and the annexation of the province.
