"Strike in such a way that the condemned feels they are dying." Vipsania Agrippina Maior was the daughter of Marcus Agrippa and Julia, the daughter of Augustus. She married Germanicus, the nephew of Tiberius. A devoted wife, she accompanied her husband on all his campaigns. However, she was accused of having an uncontrollable temper and excessive ambition. In AD 19, Germanicus died under unclear circumstances. Tiberius and his favorite, Sejanus, feared she might attempt to place one of her children on the throne and sought to eliminate her. She was so severely beaten by Tiberius's soldiers that she lost an eye. By order of the Senate, she was exiled to Herculaneum and later to the island of Pandateria, where she starved herself to death. When her son Caligula became emperor, he posthumously rehabilitated Agrippina, his mother.
