coins ancient to romans imperial and republican vespasian 69 79

Caesar Vespasianus Augustus

"Divus Vespasianus" Suetonius writes: "During his ninth consulship, while in Campania, he suffered a mild fever and immediately returned to the capital. From there, he went to Cutiliae and to his estate near Reate, where he spent every summer. Here, worsening illness was compounded by frequent drinking of water, further damaging his stomach. Nevertheless, he continued to fulfill his imperial duties as usual, even receiving delegations while lying down. Suddenly, he was struck by diarrhea and became completely debilitated."

Sensing his end, he is said to have remarked ironically: "I think I am becoming a god" and ordered himself to be lifted, declaring: "an emperor of the Romans dies standing." He passed away on June 23, 79 CE, in Rome. Titus succeeded his father as emperor, and this coin commemorates the consecration of the deified father.
