Nerva Caesar Augustus
"Aequitas Augusti" Upon ascending the throne, Nerva pursued a much milder policy than his predecessor. He abolished the crime of maiestas (treason against the emperor), raised taxes, refrained from organizing games for a time, reduced the distribution of free grain, and even sold off unnecessary imperial estates. As a result, the treasury quickly regained its former splendor, allowing Rome to overcome these inconveniences. Additionally, he released prisoners accused of treason, restored confiscated properties, strengthened the role of the Senate, and prohibited informant practices. He also provided aid to impoverished Italian farmers.
Aequitas was the personification of fair trade and merchants. She also embodied the virtues of equity and justice associated with the emperor.
