Marcus Aurelius Antoninus

"Armeniacus – Conqueror of the Armenians" In late summer or autumn of 161 CE, Vologases IV of Parthia invaded and conquered the lands of the Roman client kingdom of Armenia. He expelled its king and crowned his own choice, Pacorus, an Arsacid like himself. In 162 CE, Lucius Verus (the adopted brother of Emperor Marcus Aurelius) launched a war to reclaim Armenia and avenge the Parthian incursions into Armenia and Syria. The Armenian capital, Artaxata, was recaptured in 163 CE.

By the end of that year, Verus adopted the title Armeniacus, even though he had never personally participated in the fighting. Initially, Marcus Aurelius declined to accept the title but ultimately took it in 164 CE. This denarius commemorates the event.
