coins ancient to romans imperial and republican quintillus 270

Marcus Aurelius Claudius Quintillus

"Fides Militum – Was It Military Disloyalty?" The brother of Emperor Claudius II Gothicus, Quintillus was proclaimed emperor by the army in 270 CE. Hailing from Illyria, Quintillus had advanced his career alongside his brother, likely serving as governor of Sardinia. Upon Claudius's death, the army swiftly declared Quintillus emperor, a decision later ratified by the Senate.

Quintillus's ephemeral reign lasted either a few weeks or approximately two to three months. The quantity of coins minted during his rule suggests a longer, several-month tenure. During his reign, however, the Danubian army declared Aurelian the new Caesar.

Upon hearing of this, Quintillus either committed suicide or was assassinated by his own soldiers, who defected to Aurelian's side.
