coins ancient to romans imperial and republican carinus caesar 282 283

Marcus Aurelius Carinus

"The Last Princeps" In the summer of 282 CE, Carinus was appointed Caesar alongside his younger brother Numerian by their father, Carus, and was granted the honorary title Princeps Iuventutis. As Carus set out on a campaign against Persia, he entrusted Carinus with governance over the western part of the empire, including Gaul, Italy, Illyria, and Africa.

By the spring of 283 CE, possibly before his father’s death in the summer near Ctesiphon, Carinus had assumed the title of Augustus and likely adopted his father’s title of Germanicus Maximus. In historiography, Carinus is often regarded as the last ruler of Rome from the era of the Principate, preceding the Dominant period initiated by Diocletian and the Tetrarchy.
