Gaius Aurelius Valerius Diocletianus

"Victoria Sarmatica – Victory over the Sarmatians" The Sarmatians had settled in the region known as Sarmatia, east of Germania and north of the immediate vicinity of the Danube. These barbarian and little-known tribes also inhabited vast areas of what is now modern Russia.

In the autumn of 285 CE, on the Balkans, Diocletian encountered a Sarmatian tribe seeking assistance. The Sarmatians requested his help in reclaiming their lost lands or granting them rights to pastures within the empire. Diocletian refused and engaged them in battle, though he was unable to secure a decisive victory.

In 288 CE, Diocletian launched another campaign against the Sarmatians. Surviving inscriptions indicate that Diocletian adopted the title Sarmaticus Maximus after 289 CE.
