Flavius Julius Constans
"The Usurper" His father was a Briton, and his mother was a Frank. His wife was Justina, who later married Valentinian I. Magnentius served as a comes commanding two legions, the Joviani and Herculiani. He initiated a rebellion among the legions.
When Emperor Constans learned of the revolt, he fled to the city of Helena in the Pyrenees. However, Magnentius's forces pursued him, leading to his death in January 350 CE. Gaining full control of the Western Empire, Magnentius proclaimed himself Roman Emperor.
In 353 CE, Constantius II, ruling in the East, marched into Gaul. Magnentius suffered defeat and fled to Lugdunum (modern Lyon), where his soldiers planned to surrender him to the legitimate emperor. Realizing their intentions, Magnentius killed his mother and relatives before committing suicide on August 10 or 11, 353 CE.
