coins ancient greek macedon roman protectorate

Republican period. First Meris. Circa 167-149 BC

"The Third Macedonian War" At the end of the 3rd century BCE, King Philip V of Macedonia allied with Hannibal against Rome. Titus Quinctius Flamininus defeated Philip in 197 BCE at Cynoscephalae and forced him to renounce hegemony over Greece. In the subsequent war, Lucius Aemilius Paulus Macedonicus defeated Philip’s son Perseus at Pydna (168 BCE), deposing the Macedonian dynasty.

Macedonia submitted to Roman rule but was temporarily divided into four republics subordinate to the authority of the Roman Senate. The province of Macedonia was established in 148 BCE after the suppression of an anti-Roman revolt led by Andriscus. The province included Macedonian territories as well as Thessaly and Epirus (soon separated into the distinct province of Epirus Vetus).
