coins ancient to romans imperial and republican a plautius 55 bc

A. Plautius

"The Conquest of Judea" Both sides of this coin commemorate Gnaeus Pompey the Great's campaign in Judea. The issuer of the denarius, Aulus Plautius, had himself fought in Judea and was a political supporter of Pompey.

Cybele, depicted on the coin, symbolized fertile land as well as caves, mountains, walls, and cities. On this coin, she represents Pompey’s capture of Jerusalem after a month-long siege in 63 BCE.

Aristobulus was the younger son of Alexander Jannaeus (King of Judea, 103–76 BCE). In 70 BCE, a civil war erupted between Aristobulus and his brother Hyrcanus. In 63 BCE, Aristobulus was dethroned by Pompey and taken to Rome as a captive. In 49 BCE, Julius Caesar freed him, but on his journey back to Judea, he was poisoned by Pompey’s allies.
