CENTRAL GAUL - AEDUI

"Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres (J. Caesar)" The Aedui were one of the most powerful Celtic tribes inhabiting Gaul, primarily in the region between the Loire and Saône rivers (modern Burgundy). Their principal center was Bibracte, and they were allies of Rome.

In 60 BCE, they sent their vergobretus, Diviciacus, to Rome to seek intervention against the Germanic leader Ariovistus. During the Gallic Wars, Diviciacus's brother, Dumnorix, opposed Caesar. In 52 BCE, the Aedui joined the uprising of Vercingetorix but suffered defeat.

Their lands were subsequently incorporated into Gallia Lugdunensis. During the Roman Empire, the Aedui held a privileged status among the Gallic tribes and were the first of the so-called "barbarian" peoples to gain seats in the Roman Senate.
