Reverse: COS III P P, Fortuna, seated left, holding cornucopia in left hand and rudder in right; FORT RED in exergue, S C across fields

A magnificent medallic sestertius, with a masterfully engraved portrait and rich golden orichalcum surfaces. An exceptionally rare type. The exergual legend “FORT RED” is an abbreviation which may be translated as “Fortune who brings back,” and coins bearing this inscription were often struck in anticipation or celebration of the safe return of the Emperor from his travels.
