Medium toning, well-centered strike, heavy circulation wear. Very rare. The city of Argos is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. It rose to prominence in the 7th century BC and became the dominant power in the Peloponnese for the next 150 years, until it was defeated by its rival city-state Sparta at the Battle of Sepeia in 494 BC. Later, Argos allied itself with Athens against Sparta during the Peloponnesian Wars (fought in two separate conflicts from 460-404 BC), although its contribution to the Athenian’s war efforts were minimal, and Argos never regained the preeminence it once held.
