Caesar Vespasianus Augustus
"Judea Capta! – Judea Conquered!" In 66 CE, a Jewish revolt against Rome broke out in Caesarea, quickly spreading across all of Judea. At 57 years old, Vespasian was the only person not suspected by Emperor Nero of being a rival for the throne, which led Nero to choose him for the mission. In 67 CE, Vespasian began his invasion of Galilee, capturing Jewish cities one after another. After landing with his army in Caesarea, he initiated the siege of Jerusalem. He occupied Perea, seized Gadara, and stationed the Legio X Fretensis there. In the spring, he took control of cities along the coastal plain, leaving the Legio V Macedonica in Emmaus. The remaining forces moved north and captured Jericho, where the Legio X was also deployed. By 68 CE, Jewish resistance in the north had been crushed.
