coins ancient to romans imperial and republican domitian 81 96

Caesar Domitianus Augustus

"Minerva" was the Roman goddess of wisdom, commerce, medicine, arts, and magic. Romans equated her with the Greek goddess Athena and often depicted her with a sacred owl. Minerva was born from the head of Jupiter.

After impregnating the Titaness Metis, Jupiter recalled a prophecy that his own child would overthrow him. Fearing that their child would rule the heavens in his place, Jupiter swallowed Metis whole. While inside him, the Titaness forged weapons and armor for their child, and the constant clanging and hammering gave Jupiter a terrible headache. To relieve the pain, Vulcan used a hammer to split open Jupiter’s head, and from the crack emerged Minerva—fully grown, carrying the weapons and armor made by her mother.
