Gaius Julius Verus Maximinus

"The Barbarian Emperor" Maximinus Thrax was born around 172 AD in Thrace or Moesia. He is considered the first barbarian (non-Roman) to don the imperial purple. He never set foot in Rome and was the first in a series of so-called soldier-emperors.

His reign is often regarded as the beginning of the Crisis of the Third Century. Ancient sources describe Maximinus as a man of colossal stature—reportedly standing about 250 cm tall. His thumb was said to be so large that he wore his wife's bracelet as a ring. He was noted for his prominent forehead, nose, and jaw. Allegedly, he could pull a loaded wagon with his bare hands, knock out a horse's teeth with a punch, break its leg with a kick, or crush its torso. Among his soldiers, he was nicknamed Hercules or Antaeus.
