coins ancient to romans imperial and republican maximinus thrax 235 238

Gaius Julius Verus Maximinus

"Germanicus Maximus!" Maximinus' political position, as someone not from the elite, was weak, and his power relied primarily on the army. In the summer of 235 CE, he crossed the Rhine near Mogontiacum (Mainz) and advanced through the Agri Decumates, forcing the Germanic tribes to make peace, despite suffering significant losses in the swamps of the region. After the victory, Maximinus assumed the title Germanicus Maximus, appointed his son as Caesar and Princeps Iuventutis, and deified his wife.

Maximinus then launched a second campaign deeper into Germania, defeating a Germanic tribe near the Weser River. After securing the Germanic frontier, he moved to the winter camp in Sirmium, Pannonia, to campaign against the Dacians and Sarmatians during the winter of 235–236 CE.
