Decimus Caelius Calvinus Balbinus

"Pietas Mutua Augustorum – The Mutual Providence of the Emperors" Aleksander Krawczuk writes: "The Senate session took place behind closed doors in the Temple of Concord on the Roman Forum. After stormy deliberations, an extraordinary and unprecedented decision was made: it was proclaimed that there would be two emperors reigning simultaneously, with equal rights, neither conceding anything to the other in terms of titles or authority! (...) The Senate chose emperors of contrasting temperaments and life experiences. It was certainly anticipated that their actions would complement one another but also restrain each other when necessary. This, in turn, guaranteed that the times of absolute autocracy would not return. These were plans and hopes that seemed entirely realistic at first glance."
