coins ancient to romans imperial and republican maximianus herculius first reign 286 305

Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maximianus

"The Gallic Massacre" In AD 286, Maximianus was dispatched by Emperor Diocletian to confront the Gallic rebels. After their defeat, he was elevated to the rank of Augustus on April 1, AD 286. When Diocletian established the Tetrarchy, Maximianus became emperor of the western empire, and seven years later, Constantius I joined him as Caesar.

Maximianus was forced to abdicate along with Diocletian in AD 305, but he reclaimed the throne a year later alongside his son, Maxentius. After being compelled to abdicate again during the Council of Carnuntum, he once more assumed the title of Augustus in AD 310. However, he was ultimately defeated and forced to commit suicide by Constantine the Great.
