Marcus Aurelius Mausaeus Carausius

"The Usurper from Britain" Carausius was a native of the Celtic tribe of the Menapii (Menapiae civis), who inhabited the region of Gallia Belgica. He came from humble origins, born into a family with a seafaring tradition. In his youth, he worked as a ship’s pilot. During the reign of Emperor Maximianus, he distinguished himself in campaigns in Gaul.

As a high-ranking officer under Maximianus, Carausius organized a fleet to combat Frankish and Saxon sea pirates who raided the coasts of Gaul and Britain, using Gesoriacum as his base of operations. However, he exploited his position for personal gain, seizing loot recovered from the pirates. When faced with arrest, he fled to Britain, where he declared himself Roman Emperor. The Roman legions stationed in Britain pledged allegiance to the usurper.
