coins ancient to romans imperial and republican severus ii caesar 305 306

Flavius Valerius Severus

"The Abandoned Emperor" He was an officer in the Roman army and served for many years in Pannonia. On May 1, 305 CE, when Diocletian and Maximianus abdicated, Severus was appointed Caesar of the West. In 306 CE, following the death of Constantius, he became Augustus of the West.

In 306 CE, riots erupted in Rome, and Maxentius seized the opportunity to proclaim himself emperor with the support of the military. Galerius ordered Severus, who was in Milan, to suppress the rebellion. However, when Severus advanced towards Rome with his army, most of his soldiers deserted him and joined their former emperor Maximian.

Severus fled with the remnants of his army to Ravenna but soon surrendered. In 307 CE, he was either executed by hanging on Maxentius's orders or forced to commit suicide.
