Gaius Galerius Valerius Maximianus
"Genio Populi Romani" He hailed from Illyria and began his military career as a common soldier in the armies of Aurelian and later Probus. He gained fame through a victorious campaign against the Persians in 297–299 CE. In 293 CE, following the establishment of the Tetrarchy, he was appointed Caesar under the ruler of the Eastern part of the empire, Diocletian, and was entrusted with governing the Balkan provinces. To strengthen political ties, he married Diocletian's daughter, Valeria.
It is believed that under Galerius's influence and pressure, Diocletian decided to initiate the persecution of Christians in the empire. After Diocletian's abdication in 305 CE, Galerius became the Emperor of the East with the title of Augustus, selecting Maximinus Daia as his Caesar.
