Gaius Galerius Valerius Maximinus
"The Fanatic" Despite his humble origins and lack of education, Maximinus II was said to support scholars and writers, surrounding himself with learned individuals. However, his primitive nature was significantly influenced by alcohol, which led him to lose self-control and exhibit brutality and cruelty. As a follower of traditional religion, Maximinus supported and revived popular cults (e.g., Serapis, Jupiter, Apollo, Tyche-Fortuna, Hercules). He also sought to organize these cults with a structure modeled on Christianity, including a priestly hierarchy subordinate to provincial leaders (high priests).
Considered a fanatic, he stood out among the tetrarchs for his zealous and ruthless enforcement of Diocletian's edicts on the persecution of Christians.
