Flavius Iovianus
"Overcome by Fumes" He was born around 331 CE in Singidunum (Moesia) as the son of Varronianus, commander of the imperial guard (domestici et protectores) under Constantine II. In 363 CE, Jovian himself became commander of the guard.
After being elected emperor, Jovian led the retreating Roman forces from Persia. He negotiated a 30-year peace treaty with the Persians, ceding lands beyond the Tigris, including Nisibis and Singara. Jovian reversed the anti-Christian policies of Julian II and openly supported Christianity, though he did not ban pagan practices.
On January 1, he assumed the consulship along with his infant son, Varronianus. While traveling to Europe, Jovian stopped in Dadastana, where he most likely died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Jovian was buried in Constantinople at the Church of the Holy Apostles.
