Flavius Iulius Valens
"The Missing" He was born in 328 CE in Cibalae (southern Pannonia). In 375 CE, Emperor Valentinian, brother of Valens, died suddenly, leaving two underage sons, Gratian and Valentinian II, as co-emperors of the Western Roman Empire. Valens, ruling the Eastern part of the empire, had to abandon his plans for an invasion of Persia to address the growing threat posed by the Goths in the West.
In early August 378 CE, without waiting for Gratian's army to arrive, Valens marched against the Gothic forces. This led to the Battle of Adrianople. The emperor perished during the battle—either struck by an arrow and drowned in a swamp after falling from his horse, or, wounded, he fled the battlefield and sought refuge in a house that was subsequently set ablaze by the Goths. His body was never recovered.
