Luca Romano
The LVCA ROMANO Collection

In 163–164 AD, during the joint reign of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, Rome was engaged in the Parthian War. In 163, Roman forces under Statius Priscus reconquered Armenia, installing a client king loyal to the Empire. The following year, in 164, the legions pushed further east into Mesopotamia, securing key cities like Edessa. These campaigns marked the turning point of the war, paving the way for the later capture of Seleucia and Ctesiphon in 165.

Yet these victories carried heavy costs: the returning armies brought with them the Antonine Plague, which would devastate the Empire and weaken its defenses, setting the stage for the Marcomannic Wars soon after.

This sestertius is a prime example of the Emperor's military propaganda of the time. It is also one of the finest specimens in my collection. I am very proud and honored to have it in my possession.
