monnaies antiques romaines imperiales republicaines 237 1b var lucretia 136 bc

AR Denarius (Rome, 136 BC)

O/ Helmeted head of Roma right, with necklace of pendants; TRI behind; X below chin.

R/ The Dioscuri galloping right; CN LVCR below; ROMA in exergue.

3.87g; 20mm

Crawford 237/1bvar. (170 obverse dies/212 reverse dies)

- Ex collection of Elvira Elisa Clain-Stefanelli (1914-2001), former director of the National Numismatic Collection (part of the Smithsonian Institute).

- Naville Live Auction 29, lot 502.

This is an unrecorded variant with TRI instead of TRIO on the obverse. The engraver probably made a mistake by not allocating enough space for the legend. Same dies as NAC 27, lot 218 (CHF 700) and NAC 59, lot 704 (CHF 1300); same obverse die as NAC 61, lot 975 (CHF 450).

Gnaeus Lucretius Trio:

Trio's life is completely unknown since the cognomen Trio only appears on his coins and those of his probable grandson, moneyer in c.76 BC (RRC 390). The Lucretii Triones belonged to one of the numerous plebeian branches of the gens Lucretia, which was originally patrician.
