art antiquites africain statuettes memory board lukasa

Lovely old lukasa with very sweet and deep patina through years of use and a ripe “skin”.
Apart from beaded memory boards, the Luba have also made examples that are decorated with pictographic carving. The tribal historians working for chiefs and kings used them to “read” the local oral traditions on the migrations and state building activities of the various Luba groups. In the rectangular part of the board we find all sorts of symbols containing historical information ready for interpretation. The grip of the board consists of a classic male figure, finely carved with beard and coiffure.
