Siderite sur Ferberite
Level 2, D13 R4 AW25, Panasqueira Mines, Covilha, Castelo Branco, Portugal
13.5 x 9.8 x 7.8 cm
Sculptural and impressive large siderite from the famous Panasqueira mines. The densely intergrown stout, sharp rhombohedrons are dominated by the striking large 6.8 cm rhomb and highlighted by the fascinating preferential coatings on one side of the crystals. The siderites are all pristine. An outstanding large siderite combination from the classic locale.
The highly lustrous gray-brown faces are peppered with tiny sparkly pyrite microcrystals. The crystal backsides have an interesting preferential coating of drusy calcite and pyrite microcrystals.
A REAL bonus is the underlying matrix of sections of large parallel-growth, splendent jet-black ferberite blades.
Ex Art Soregaroli Collection.
ADDENDUM, ADDED OCTOBER 22, 2017
"Sadly, Art passed away peacefully surrounded by family on October 19, 2017. With his passing the mineral world lost a great geologist/mineral scientist, staunch friend and true gentleman - the outpouring of tributes from those whose lives he touched has been impressive. His work getting the Pinch Collection to the Canadian Museum of Nature was mentioned by many, as was his work with the Brittania Mine mining museum near his home in British Columbia, and his manifold contributions to mineral symposia...especially the Pacific Northwest FM Symposium that closed just 2 days before his passing. Jordi Fabre noted that Art was single-handedly responsible for guiding the famous Panasquiera Mine in Portugal back into the black so that could not only thrive as a metals mine, but continue to produce quantities of excellent specimens to this day." - Dr. Peter Megaw
