Obv: IMP P LIC VALERIANO AVG
Rev.: VIRTVS AVG
Mint: Viminacium
Year:  late 253

RIC 266, MIR. 36/795d (6 ex.), Gbl794d - Eauze 1368

A scarce coin that was minted in late 253, just after Valerian had seized power, but before he had appointed his son Gallienus as co-emperor. Hence, the reverse legend refers to only one Augustus.

The mint of Viminacium in Lower Moesia started to mint coins for Valerian in 253 and seemed to have had a substantial issue until about 257, working with 3 or 6 workshops. From 257 the personnel was successively transfered to the Rhenish mints and minting at Viminacium seized in 258.
