United States: copper Draped Bust half cent, 1804, "Spiked Chin" variety
Obverse: Draped Bust of Liberty right.
Reverse: Denomination within wreath, fraction below.
Issuer: United States Mint, Philadelphia.
Specifications: Copper, 5.4 g, 23.5 mm.
Grade: PCGS XF40; cert #44307721.
Reference: Numista-16948, KM-33.
Provenance: ex-David Lawrence Rare Coins, Virginia, USA, Internet Auction #1210, 27 February 2022. *
Notes: It is believed that the "spike" which protrudes from Liberty's chin on this variety was caused by a loose screw contacting the die. The characteristic parallel ridges in the right obverse field were likely caused by the the threads of that screw.
Comments: I have always liked this variety and used to own a PCGS VF20 example with a very similar appearance.
