The first beautiful Silver coin in the new series “Bioluminescent Animals” celebrates the luminous jellyfish Pelagia Noctiluca. Known for its unique glow-in-the-dark colouring, the series highlights creatures in nature that produce their own light. The state-of-the-art minting technologies faithfully showcase the jellyfish bioluminescence, thanks to high-end digital printing. The large colour Pelagia is well done and will glow in a darkened room. Each coin is struck from 17,5 g silver 999 in proof quality and comes housed in a specially designed presentation case. Limited mintage to 999 pieces in the world.
The obverse of the coin depicts the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions are separated by decorative dots: “ELIZABETH II”, “NIUE ISLAND” (issue country), “1 DOLLAR” (the face value) and “2016” (year of issue).
The reverse design features a colourful Pelagia jellyfish, the luminous medusa, in an underwater scene from deep water. On the right side of the coin - relief image of the species. The beautiful pink jellyfish takes a new life, changing in an iridescent green medusa illuminated under a black light. In the background – stylized decorative surface. All around the coin, the name of the species in Latin is: “Pelagia noctiluca”.
Impressive bioluminescence is demonstrated on the reverse of the coin - the large-coloured Pelagia Noctiluca is well done and will glow in the night! A species of jellyfish found in Bermuda and throughout warm and temperate waters, Pelagia noctiluca may grow to 10 cm in diameter. Light is given off in the form of flashes when the jellyfish is stirred up by turbulence created by waves or a ship’s motion. This flashing is only of relatively short duration and gradually fades.
