Ulysses S. Grant left profile center with "Gen. U.S. Grant" surrounding. In 1864 Lieutenant General Grant is given command of all Federal armies during the Civil War. By 9 April 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrenders at Appomattox ending the war. In 1866 Grant is elevated to General of the Armies of the United States. By 1867 Grant goes on to serve as interim Secretary of War in President Andrew Johnson's administration. He resigns the position in 1868, and he runs for President. On 4 March 1869 he becomes the 18th President of the United States. He serves two terms and leaves office in 1876. He travels, writes his memoirs, and eventually settles in Mount McGregor, New York. In July of 1885 he dies there. Initially, he is buried in a vault in New York City’s Riverside Park; however, in 1897 his remains are moved to their current resting place, a tomb at Riverside Drive on Morningside Heights in New York. The dedication draws 1,000,000 people, including President William McKinley. My guess is that this medal was produced to be sold in conjunction with the dedication ceremony.
