Langobards, uncertain ruler, circa 568-690
Obv.: D N IVSTINI-ANV PP AIC
Rev.: VICTORIA AVGVSTORIVM
Exergue: CONOB
Measurements: 16 mm, 1.42 g, 6 h
Arslan 1 var. MEC I, 294 var.
Obverse and reverse legends include spelling mistakes. Also the mintmark CONOB is executed in a non-official way. The unbarred letter A and the bust style confirm that the coin was struck at an Italian mint. The PP in the obvers legend precludes Rome, while the way the hair is rendered reminds of the last Ostrogothic issues from Ticinum (Pavia). Hence, it is likely that this coin was produced by either one of these mints under Langobardi rule.
This coin was probably minted not too long after the arrival of the Langobards and their allies in Italy in 568. Hence, it may have been minted under the authority of Alboin (565 - 572) or Cleph (572- 574) or during the period when there was no centralized kingship from 574 to 584.
