Ingrid Hansen’s wildlife paintings bring complexity and tenderness to the idea of "the wild” — illuminating moments of stillness, togetherness, and contemplation in animals who live beyond, amongst, or at odds with human civilization. She uses gentle, semi-translucent layers of color and texture to form the blades of grass, ocean waters, and dense forests where her subjects live. Having cared for companion birds and cats throughout her life, Hansen has been interested in animals since childhood. The tenderness with which she treats her painted subjects translates equally into her jewelry and fiber works, where color and pattern intermingle. In her polymer earrings, the miniature features of birds, mermaids, and grapes are carefully formed.
Hansen has presented work in exhibitions throughout Minnesota, recently including We Are Not Disposable (2020), Randomland at The White Page (2019), and Changing Landscapes at the University of Minnesota’s Institute on Community Integration (2017). In addition to her studio practice, Hansen has taught workshops at Interact in polymer clay and fibers.
